on the ukelele–
synapses blurred,
speed-drenched,
many hands
strumming.
I emigrated from Malaysia
but returned
to this
playing at break-neck speed.
Breaking my neck on this,
making like it’s
my neck on speed,
always on time
and
never fail.
When I was back in Malaysia I
invested
in the American Thrill Corporation, for
I required–demanded–a company
that is sound.
They drummed me out of there via
ukelele.
When I was back there I robbed and
raided;
Bandito.
“Bandito” is how they called me.
And now I am a
foreigner and my heart is sound, even
though
they drummed me out of there on ukeleles. Drummed
me out and through it,
though
my heart was already living
in the body of the
American Thrill Corporation.
And now I am a part of the industry.
And though I dwell in the city of industry
and my foundations are
sound
you
must reply.
Like the instrument that I call
Neverfail.
Strum ukelele
by reply.
Strum away all that is not your reply.
Double strum through,
though
every strumming sound is a message
layered six strings
thick.
When I came from Malaysia
No one ever expected
this
that I would sing like
the ukelele
And that you would answer,
Neverfail.
